Central TX Track & Sign Certification 5/21/2023
The Earth Native Wilderness School organized 2 Track and Sign Certifications around Bastrop, Texas from May 20-21, 2023. Dave Scott ran one of the certifications and I ran the other.
The weather was amazingly cooperative. We had to work around some rain, but the temperatures were fantastic for this time of year. We spent half of Saturday under a large bridge and the other half at the Earth Native School campus. All told, saw the tracks of 29 species, including 16 mammals, 6 birds, 3 herps, 3 invertebrates, and an odd shoe print from a human. Some favorites include a beautiful set of owl tracks, snapping turtle tracks, and tracks and scats of beaver, nutria, and river otter.

Hi Jonah,
How were you telling apart the Asian clam tracks from the tracks of dragonfly naiads? Straighter tracks for the dragonfly naiad?
Hi Kim! Those signs are really common here when water levels rise and then recede. I think the clams get exposed on the banks and do these spiral search patters trying to find the water. I have some similar pics with the clam still in the trough. I’m not really sure about how this might look different from sign left by dragonfly naiads.
