Point Reyes CA Track & Sign Certification 5/25/2025
On May 24-25, 2025, UC Berkeley hosted a Track & Sign Certification in Point Reyes National Seashore, California.
Despite some windy conditions, the tracking was excellent. We found some muddy banks along Drakes Estero with beautiful tracks of mole, otter, coyote, and some really cool cough pellets of multiple bird species (thanks Jack Harrison for locating this spot!). We then went to Muddy Hollow and saw sign of elk, gray fox, and even found some bat guano. On Sunday, we went to Abbotts Lagoon, a well known local tracking spot, where we saw beautiful otter tracks and sign and amazing owl tracks in the dunes. All told, we saw the tracks of 22 species, including 14 mammals, 5 birds, and 3 herps. See the photos below.
Huge thanks to Alan Shabel for organizing and Erica Harris and Oscar Lagna for clip-boarding.
