Santa Barbara Tracker Certification 11/15/2020
On November 14 & 15, I conducted a Track and Sign Certification in Santa Barbara County for the Wilderness Youth Project. It was a bit of a strange event due to Covid precautions. Safety was our top priority and everyone did a great job wearing masks, sanitizing hands, and maintaining distance.
We spent the first day at the North Campus Open Space and at a bridge in the town. Day 2 was spent at the White Rock Day Use area. All told, we saw the tracks of 28 species, including 18 mammals, 8 birds, 1 invertebrate, and the strange sign left from a high tide mark. We saw tracks and sign of red fox, coyote, burrowing owl, turkeys, and much more. See the photos below.
A big thanks to Dan Fontaine and Wilderness Youth Project for organizing this certification. I also want to thank Amanda Meller and Daniel Hansche for assisting. This is a really fun group of environmental educators and I enjoy their enthusiasm for learning and spending time outdoors.
